Almeria is also a city for gaiety, enjoyment and fun. If you visit the city during any of its festivals, you will find out for yourself. Consider yourself invited.
The first Sunday in January we commemorate the appearance of Our Lady of the Sea at the beach of Torre Garcia, which took place in 1502. The figure of Our Lady is carried from the Basilica where it is held in honor all year long, to the Hermitage of Torre Garcia, then returned in the evening.
(Pre-Lenten Festival). After a historical parenthesis, the "Carnaval" of Almeria reappeared with great vigour in 1983. Today it is one of the most important festivals of the city, with its Music and humorous theatrics: "Comparsas", "Murgas" and Parodies.
From Palm Sunday until Easter day, the Catholic brotherhoods parade through the streets of Almeria, displaying their images, gold and silversmithing, wood carvings and embroidered works, all of great wealth and showmanship.
Traditional Spring Festival which regained importance and popularity during the 80s. It is celebrated during the first days of May.
Fiestas in honor of Our Lady of the Sea, patron of the City. These are held during the entire second half of August each year.
On December 26 we celebrate a civic, military and religious holiday, the taking of the City by Ferdinand and Isabella ("the Catholic Kings") in 1489.
